Katchafire
Nas told Billboard last week he was cooking up a few surprises, and now we know one of them: an as-yet-untitled collaboration with reggae star Damian Marley.
The pair has been recording quietly in Los Angeles for the last several weeks. Nas' manager, Anthony Saleh, tells Billboard the project will most likely be released in the spring. It's not clear which label will release it; Nas is signed to Def Jam, while Marley records for Universal."We've been recording in a studio, where people like Mick Jagger are recording. No one knew who we were," Saleh says. "We're going to Miami this week to finish it up and we're aiming to tour for the album this summer."
In addition to its regular incarnation, the album may also be released in a special edition exclusively through Best Buy or Target. A portion of the proceeds will go toward building a school in Africa, though details are still being solidified.
Soca king Machel Montano and Ace dancehall act Busy Signal teamed up for the remix of Montano's hugely popular song Push Bumper... and the result was an even more infectious track that ensure soca fans three-and-a-half minutes of hip-gyrating fun. At the start of the song Busy Signal's voice is heard, spitting catchy lyrics and rhymes which soon gives way to Machel Montano's calypsonian crooning, and then eventually a chorus comes in, which the two award-winning Caribbean artistes share.Machel Montano is also no stranger to getting the thumbs up from music lovers. Montano, who last year copped the Bob Marley Award for Entertainer of the Year at the 27th International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA), has been recording songs for more than 25 years, and it's not the first time he's teamed up with a Jamaican artiste. Montano has also done collaborations with Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Shaggy, Buju Banton, Red Rat, and Mr Vegas.

Say What You're Thinking
One could say that Meshach is probably the most popular Reggae Artist in St.Lucia. This popularity is not just based on great Reggae but on the fact Meshach gave a ‘voice to the sufferer’ through his music. With his commitment to always remain rooted within the rural community of Choiseul has helped Meshach stay connected to his fan base (the young impressionable youth of the ghetto). Good lyrical content and great music mixed with Meshach’s dynamic live performances makes him a true force in Reggae. His debut CD Awake gathered rave reviews and was followed up with performances regionally and in the US. His second CD is to be released later this year.
Nothing more can be said about Michel Aubertin other than that he is a true musical talent. His vocal ability stretches from Reggae, R&B/Soul to Jazz and Opera. His musical versatility has enabled him to find a sound that is truly his own. Those of us who attended the 2009 St.Lucia Jazz festival would have experienced Michel’s melodious fusion of great vocals and fantastic music. With Barbara Cadet at the helm as musical director it was truly a performance to behold. It was also Michel’s first performance as a solo act on such a grand scale. Most recently he recorded on tracks with Hip Hop’s Jadakis, Camron and Dipset. Look out there's more to come...
Francis “Leebo” De Lima has become a corner stone in this new age of St.Lucia music. With some fifteen years of experience in the music industry both as Producer and as an Artiste, Leebo (as he is more affectionately known) has had probably the greatest individual influence on the development of St.Lucia Music in resent times. From his early days with group Kronic Heights (which also featured Gary Devoux, Link and Bruno) to his move in to the production side of things under Producer/Drummer Adam Gilmore (Heights Music Production) Leebo has now become the producer of choice for most in the music business in St.Lucia. Leebo’s talent as an Artist is also note worthy. With a vibe that is truly his, Leebo has racked up a number of hits of his own, Rain, Unconditional and De javous just to name a few. More…
The past 3 years have found the boys giving their passports a considerable workout, from festival appearances all over Europe to increasingly successful mainland U.S. excursions. They now draw huge crowds all over the Pacific, from Australia to Guam and Saipan. On record, Katchafire reached a new level of musical depth and maturity on 2007's "Say What You're Thinking". With jazz, pop, rock and even hip-hop influences enhancing a solid roots foundation, they scored their greatest American chart success to date with a 6 showing on the Billboard Reggae chart. Katchafire is well-known for trading instruments among themselves during their marathon live shows.
That versatility is demonstrated as never before on this album, with no less than five band contributing songs and sharing lead vocal duties."It's a tribute to the global spread of reggae that a group like Katchafire can deliver such a great album in "Say What You're Thinking", with a depth of songs and cool musicality. Katchafire represents the best of reggae today, and it's out of New Zealand." Dermot Hussey Program Director XM 101
Hailing from the Island of St Croix, Midnite is one of the most promising roots reggae bands of the millennium. They are vanguards of conscious reggae who represent the King's and Queen's music to the fullness of Jah. Midnite's profound and innovative lyrics are sincere and deeply rooted to present the other half of the story. Lead singer Vaughn Benjamin's electrifying voice seems an amalgamation of many great voices in reggae- soulful, chanting, edgy. Vaughn's potent lyrical style and his brother Ron's exquisite keyboards and musical directorship form the nucleus of this musical quintet, which includes fellow St. Croix players Dion Hopkins (drums), Philip Merchant (bass) and Abijah (guitar). Midnite weaves the cultural lyrics of "old school" roots music with modern day experiences to create a unique listening encounter. Reggae - naked and raw is an apt description for Midnite's "classic roots" musical style, in which they forgo the frills of extensive remixes, overdubbing and other musical refinements.

Critics have said K'naan has "a sound that fuses Bob Marley, conscious American hip hop, and brilliant protest poetry." His voice and style have been compared to Eminem, but his subject matter is very different; according to K'naan, he makes "urgent music with a message", talking about the situation in his homeland of Somalia and calling for an end to violence and bloodshed. He specifically tries to avoid gangsta rap clichés and posturing, saying:
"All Somalis know that gangsterism isn't to brag about. The kids that I was growing up with [in Rexdale] would wear baggy [track] suit pants, and a little jacket from Zellers or something, and they'd walk into school, and all the cool kids would be like, 'Ah, man, look at these Somalis. Yo, you're a punk!' And the other kid won't say nothing, but that kid, probably, has killed fifteen people."
This statement was made to explain his position on the world of difference which exists between where he grew up, and the ghettos of the first world. Nonetheless, K'naan denies that he is overtly political, instead explaining that he "[shows] the state of the world [and] if you call it like it is you're being political.". His own opinion of his music is that it's a "mix of tradition and [a] kind of articulation of my own life and ... my past experiences."

"People don't realize that I had to come from a village in Sri Lanka to get here. So the journey is about the journey itself, not just about doing music... Nobody wants to be dancing to political songs. Every bit of music out there that’s making it into the mainstream is really about nothing. I wanted to see if I could write songs about something important and make it sound like nothing. And it kind of worked...I haven't heard honesty in music for so long and this is how I feel, and this is what I think. You don't even have to say words.. I was just being as raw as possible. I wanted to make music that you felt in your gut.... You can't separate the world into two parts like that, good and evil. Terrorism is a method. But America has successfully tied all these pockets of independence struggles, revolutions and extremists into one big notion of terrorism. You can't grab someone by the neck and choke them and then complain they're kicking you. If you're going around oppressing people, they will fight back..."

CéU, (pronounced like "cell" with a soft "l" ), was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2006 for Best New Artist. Her music has been described as soul, afrobeat and electrojazz, but her roots are in Samba and her music expresses the modern urban São Paulo take on the Samba beat. She was born in São Paulo, Brazil on April 17, 1980, into a musical family, her father being a composer, arranger and musicologist. It was from her father that she learned to appreciate Brazil's classical music composers, particularly Heitor Villa-Lobos, Ernesto Nazaré and Orlando Silva. By age fifteen she had decided to become a musician and by her late teens she had studied music theory, as well as the violão (nylon-stringed Brazilian guitar). Her songs reveal her many influences, which include samba, valsa, choro, soul, rhythm and blues, hip hop, afrobeat and electrojazz music. As CéU herself explained,
"I have a passion for Black culture, from Jazz divas to Afro beat. Everything comes from Africa. With Samba, I have a very strong connection to the old school that we call 'Samba de raiz' (Root Samba). I am a vinyl listener, so I tried to bring some of that to the CD, mixing it with modern things like rap or even 'Brega', which is the newest thing in Brazil."
Chambao appeared almost by surprise. In the midst of all sorts of fusion, the band from Málaga developed the one that could have appeared most daring: the flamenco sounds and palos (forms) alongside electronic music. Almost from nothing, Chambao created a new musical style that was very unique, flamenco chill. And time has proved them right. After several years’ activity, while others have fallen behind and the number of recordings of flamenco chill sessions has been constantly growing, Chambao is one of the few bands that have been able to achieve a fusion that is harmonic.
Chambao, whose name is taken from the tents that are improvised by people on beaches to shelter themselves from the sun and breeze, started off as a trio: La Mari, Edi and Dani. Together, the three of them took part in the double CD by various artists that was released by Sony under the title "Flamenco Chill" (2002).In 2003 the band’s first record on their own, "Endorfinas en la mente", appeared. It was released in more than twenty countries, sold over 80,000 copies and received the Premio Ondas (Ondas Award) for the Best Musical Creation. With "Pokito a poko" (2005)
The fusion of flamenco with jazz, soul and dance rhythms in Buika's music mirrors the story of her own life. Her father was a political exile from Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony with one of the most repressive regimes in Africa. She grew up in Spain, on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, where the population includes American millionaires, German and English tourists, and poor Gypsies in the barrio where her family lived. But, she says, there was no one else of African origin.
Buika's latest album, La Nina de Fuego, is a collection of flamenco songs and Spanish and Mexican folk ballads. The songs are about women dealing with loneliness, infidelity and the consequences of falling in love with the wrong man — or woman. Buika's turbulent affairs with both sexes has only added to her allure in Spain. "I sing against emotional dictatorships," she says, "and against the imposition of one person over another, in the name of love."

They say that timing is everything. So that being said this is the perfect time for the release of Miguel ‘Andros’ Aubertin’s 15 Track DEBUT CD 'Divine Love'. With the resurgence of conscious reggae to main stream air waves, there is no doubt that ANDROS will satisfy the craving of reggae lovers every where.
The royal countenance of this young Rastafarian singer is aptly reflected in his name “Prince Theo”. Like the Ethiopian princes of ancient realms, he strives for a life of purpose with consciousness in both himself and his art. Raised in a Rasta family and anointed by the holy waters of bath fountain in eastern Jamaica (which draws visitors from the whole world) where he gets his powers from, and are reflected in him physically, spiritually and artistically. Cultural lyrics and a fresh positivness are the signs of his music. His talent is a natural gift and this becomes clear when Prince Theo humbly explains his abilities “Music adopted me spiritually as I was ordained by the vibrations of the Almighty – it’s a natural mysticism.”His early recordings “Jailhouse” on the Linx Label, “Gi mi di Weed” on King Jammys, “Jah Rules” and “Natty on ya” on Trinity records earned him rave reviews and significant exposure on the international music scene.
The artist’s vast potential is highlighted in the latest of his recordings for Trinity, his debut album, “Set the Captives Free”. His smooth baritone voice expresses a variety of emotions; rebel soulfulness, joyful crooning and mesmerizing chanting. It would be remiss not to mention the innovative and advanced productions added to the inspired vocals give this album the highest level of musical satisfaction.“I will always give thanks to the father for his blessings – both musically and spiritually…” Prince Theo
Luna Angel brings her celestial birth name to bear .. 'with Me', her debut album of personal, spiritual and political songs that reflect the talent and insight of an old soul on young shoulders. Luna writes irresistible pop melodies and soulful reggae rhythms. Every song .. with Me has been written, co-produced, and arranged by Luna. Containing elements of reggae, R&B, jazz and a spice of dancehall; and some tunes that were composed in her teens. Many of the songs are very old, she says, but when it was time to record them, we tried to put a new flavor on them. Its like they're old, but they're completely new interpretations. Talking about the songs on her debut album, Luna is confident and deliberate. With the title track Move with Me for example, I just took my guitar and started strumming, she recalls. For me to write a song, Luna confides, I usually have to find a nice chord progression and, once I find it, it just starts spilling out.
This young talented and beautiful young Jamaican singer / songwriter first made her mark with her hit single 'Stress'. With lyrics that speak from her heart, Ruth's songs whether they be about love and relationships or social injustice connect with her audiance because
they come from that truthful place.
Guyanese singer/model Timeka Marshall got her big break after winning a jingle competition for a local telecommunications company. The release of her first R&B Single "We Should Separate" and subsequent release of the music video pushed Timeka into the lime light of the Caribbean music scene. Now with the release of two more singles – "Free" and "Ice-cream Boy"(a fresh taste on a classic) produced by international reggae producer Clive Hunt and his team of talented musicians Timeka is poised to make even bigger strides on to the international music scene.
This beautiful young woman has also become one of the most sought after models in the Guyanese fashion industry and is the spokeswoman for the DDL Fritolay brand and in this role she has visited several schools in Guyana impressing on the students the importance of education and HIV/AIDS.

The silky smooth Teddyson ‘TD’ John is once again hitting the air waves with another groovy soca hit. TD’s new single ‘Whine If Yuh Whinein’ is lighting up the air waves. The last three years Teddy has consistently turned out the hits and is perched to challenge for the Groovy Soca Monarch title which he lost last year.
Early this year Teddy was afforded the opportunity of a lifetime to perform along side R&B and Gospel greats James Ingram, Bee Bee Winans and Jeffry Osborne at the St.Lucia Jazz festival. Drawing on his R&B/Jazz background Teddy gave a fantastic performance with his fusion of R&B and Groovy Soca.
